The Hon Andrew Alexander Kirkpatrick (4 January 1848 – 19 August 1928) was an Australian politician, representing the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party. He was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1891 to 1897 and 1900 to 1909, a member of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1915 to 1918, and again a member of the Legislative Council from 1918 to 1928. He was the state Agent General in London from 1909 to 1914. Kirkpatrick was state Labor leader from 1917 to 1918, when the party split nationally over Billy Hughes' stance on conscription. Early life Kirkpatrick was born in 1848 and started working at the age of nine. He arrived in South Australia in 1860, went to night school, and apprenticed in the printing trade. Andrew Kirkpatrick (1756–1831) was an American lawyer, politician, and jurist from New Jersey. Biography Andrew Kirkpatrick was born in Mine Brook, New Jersey on February 17, 1756. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) in 1775. He served one term as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1797 to 1798. He was appointed to the New Jersey Supreme Court in 1798. In 1804, he became the chief justice of that Court, and remained so until 1825. For many years Kirkpatrick was a trustee of the College of New Jersey, and trustee of Queen's College (now Rutgers) from 1792 to 1809. He also served as a vice-president of the American Bible Society. He died on January 7, 1831, at New Brunswick, New Jersey. Marriage and family Kirpatrick married Jane Bayard in 1792, and they had four children. Andrew Kirkpatrick (October 8, 1844 – May 3, 1904) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. Education and career Born in Washington, D.C., Kirkpatrick was named after his grandfather, who had been a justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. The younger Kirkpatrick studied at Rutgers College from 1860 to 1862 before receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Union College in 1863. He read law to enter the bar in 1866. He was in private practice in Newark, New Jersey from 1866 to 1885, and was a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Essex County, New Jersey from 1885 to 1896.
